Tai Chi and yoga could prevent fall injuries in elderly Exercise regimes such as yoga and tai chi could lower the risk of elderly patients being injured in falls by a third, according to a new study. Fractures and other injuries related to falls are common among older people, with about one in three adults over 65 who live at home suffering at least one fall per year.
Some studies have suggested that exercises promoting balance and muscle strength, such as tai chi and yoga, could help lower the risk of falls happening. Now researchers from France have measured the benefit of such programmes on injury rates, by analysing the results of 10 previous trials involving thousands of participants, whose average age was 76.
They found that the exercises not only prevent falls but also lower injury rates, particularly for the most severe fall-related injuries such as fractured bones. Elderly people following fall-prevention exercise regimes were 37 per cent less likely to be injured in a fall, 43 per cent less likely to suffer severe harm and 61 per cent less likely to suffer a fracture.
Two of the trials which were studied involved the use of Tai Chi to prevent falls, while others consisted of a variety of gait, balance and “functional training” for everyday activities. Most included some form of strength or resistance training. To read more click here.
